CSI spun off shows like CSI NY and CSI Miami, but the shows were all different. Spin offs often are different from the property they originated from, sometimes in terms of genre, but not always.
Had the later game released as Fallout 5, indicating NV had been the ““fourth”” entry or had it continued the subtitled naming scheme, with something like Fallout: The Commonwealth, then NV would more easily fit into the fold as mainline entry. It was not until Fallout 4 that NV is retroactively more of a spin-off. As a follow up to the world, at the time, it could have easily been a main entry. For instance the Dark Knight trilogy are not named Batman 1, Batman 2, and Batman 3 rather Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises.Ĭonceptually, New Vegas at the time of release was more closely related to Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 than Fallout 3 ever will be.
Mainline entries in a series do not necessarily have to follow a numerical naming convention.
